IELTS Preparation: Format, Scoring, and Test-Day Practice

IELTS is the English test run by IDP, the British Council, and Cambridge, in two formats — Academic and General Training. It measures Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, each scored 1–9, with the overall band being the mean of the four.

1

Ask anything

Stuck at 11pm before a test? Ask in chat or by voice. Answers are worked to your exam's style — not generic textbook copy.

2

Watch it explained

Every topic can become a short video lesson, generated for your chapter — with real examples and diagrams.

3

Follow a plan that adapts

A daily plan built from your syllabus's weightage. Miss a day? It rebalances instead of guilt-tripping.

The test is valid for two years, can be taken on computer or paper, and results land fast on computer (about 2–5 days) and slower on paper (around 13).

The four parts of the IELTS

Listening: 30 minutes of audio plus 10 minutes to transfer answers, with 40 questions. Reading: 60 minutes, 40 questions. Writing: 60 minutes, two tasks. Speaking: 11–14 minutes, three parts, face-to-face with an examiner — or via audio at some centers.

Academic and General Training differ mainly in Reading and Writing content; Listening and Speaking are the same version.

Training every band with OmniTutor

Practice each skill the way the real test measures it: timed 40-question reading sets, listening drills with transfer discipline, and timed two-task writing blocks.

The voice tutor gives conversational practice for the three parts of Speaking, and recovery review keeps grammar and vocabulary errors visible so they actually stop repeating.

Each of the four parts is scored 1–9, and the overall score is the mean of the four — rounded to the nearest half-band. Consistency across all four is what moves the overall.

Two years from the test date in most cases, which institutions and immigration bodies enforce to make sure English ability is current. Academic or General Training selection also matters.

Computer-delivered results typically arrive about 2–5 days; paper versions around 13 days. Scores drop faster on computer, which matters when timelines are tight.

Yes — the voice tutor lets you practice the parts of the Speaking format and receive feedback. The real test is with a human examiner (or online at some centres), and no app replaces test-day condition.
